When something or someone loses their sense of purpose or hope they could classified as dead or almost dead. They need whatever it takes to make their faith come alive again.
A vehicle that is parked for a long time because it might need parts may become worst as weathering would have taken effect and other parts might become rust. Likewise someone who is gifted or gain knowledge through training might start forgetting all they had learned or some of the things they had been doing before. We see in Hebrew 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen” Faith is an active belief of receiving something that is not tangible. We can believe someone will do something for us because of the past experience and also the integrity of their words. ‘He is a man to his word’
Jesus The Foundation Of Our Faith
We got our salvation by faith believing in Jesus Christ and His finish work on the cross. We have not seen Jesus Christ unlike the disciples who the Bible says in 1 John 1 “That which was from the beginning which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, of the Word of life” but we believe in him. Jesus had prayed in St John 17: 20 “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word (KJV). We practice this relationship with Christ as if he is physically beside us. We practice this hope through his word because we learn of others in the Bible and many in our generation.
What Can Affect Our Faith
We know there are applicable ways to increase our faith and also obstacles that can affect our faith. John the Baptist the forerunner of Christ was also filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb saw the Holy Spirit like dove sat on Jesus. John’s faith was tested when he was locked up in prison. He send some of his disciples to Jesus to ask if “he was the one or should we look for another”.
Unanswered prayers can cause our faith to diminish that is why the Bible encourages us to pray without ceasing. The Bible says ‘the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much’. When our faith gets weak fervent prayers are able to make our faith come alive again. When we are going through trials limitation in the knowledge of the word of God can cause our faith to get weak. The more of the word of God we know, the better we will understand the mind of Christ. This strengthen our relationship with Jesus Christ and help us to pray according to the will of God.
What Can Limit Our Faith
- Wrong company – The Psalmist tells us in Psalm 1:1 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the ways of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful”
- Negative conversation – When we continue to hear negative words they can create the seed of doubt
- Compromise – Once we compromise our stands our faith will be affected. We will give power to the enemy of our soul and our spiritual fire will be diluted
- Continuous Problems – Problem are set the create distractions, limitations, failure and sadness therefore it can limit our faith.
Restoring The Life Of Our Faith
For something to become alive again there must be means of restoration. A key word in Hebrews 11:1 is the word hope. In Job 14:7-9 “For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down that it will sprout again and the tender branch thereof will not cease. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth and the stock thereof die in the ground. Yet at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth boughs like a plant”. We see that at the scent of water the plant life rekindles. As children of God the word God will water our soul and restore us. Only through the power of God we see faith come alive again.
It is stated in Proverbs 15:23 “A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth and a word spoken in due season how good is it”. Isaiah must have experienced some form of encouragement during his life time and also saw what right words can do. He said in Isaiah 50:4 “The Lord hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary….” When someone is going through trials and they hear someone’s similar testimony of victory it will encourage that person to continue as he or she too can also have victory.
What Can Rekindle Our Faith
- Encouraging Words – When we encourage each other we will be able experience the burden lifting.
- Miracles – Our faith will be lifted when we experience signs and wonders
Signs and wonders can cause one’s faith to come alive. Some of the disciples had lost hope and became fearful. They later went in obedience to Jesus’ command and tarry in Jerusalem. In Acts 2 When the day of Pentecost was fully come they had experienced signs and wonders when the Holy Ghost baptism came. This experience not only gave them hope, their faith was increased and they had power from God to do exploits. The Bible says in Daniel 11;32 “The people that know their God shall be strong and do exploits”.
When faith come alive again we are refreshed with strength and courage. We become inspired to be a blessing to others. Remember without faith it is impossible to please God,’ therefore our relationship with Christ is based on our faith. Whatever has been set to hinder our faith may the word of God establish a foundation to confound it.
