Christians And Social Media Influence

An Original Work/ Maurice Malcolm/ Oct 24, 2019

Everyone of us at times in our lives dream of becoming great in something we think we would enjoy doing. We are told education is the key to be successful in life. Parents and love ones would encourage their children to do well in school so that they can have a successful career and a bright future. We all can tell of who or what had inspired us to have dreams of becoming great. Sport and entertainment get the most public view either by the television or some celebrity being present at the game or the party. In this era of social media all these influences are at our finger tip while we are on the go. Social Media has taken strong root in our generation and has suddenly impact on influencing the mass. This is why business marketers are turning to Social Media to influence the mass on their products to increase sale.

In Matthew 7: 13- 14 the Bible says “Enter ye in at the strait gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction and many there be which go in thereat” 14 Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it” As social Media impacts society in a productive manner it also have it’s negative impact too. Social Media can play the role of the broad way as well as the role of the narrow way. One might ask, how can this be? From the perspective of the Bible which tells us of the broad way and narrow way both speaks of a specific direction which are different from each other. The broad way leads to destruction and the narrow way leads to life. The choice that individuals would make indicates the way he or she takes. This is done by what they allow to influence them.

Social Media has now become the world in our hands and if it become a world in our hands then we have to do as the Bible says 1 John 2: 15 “love not the world neither the things that are in the world” How do we as Christians deal with Social Media if there is a side to it that leads us to destruction and another side that leads us into life? The bible reminds us that we are in the world but we are not of the world. It is the choice that Christians would need to take in obedience to God’s word.

The Bible tell us that the love of money is the root of all evil. Money is good when it is used for the right purpose so is the same with Social Media, when it is used for a good reason. Social Media has enhanced our communication, help to advertise many church events, become a platform where Christian bloggers can share and express their love for Jesus Christ. Social Media has also impacted the education system where faster communication can help with information needed.

Children of God should not be influenced by all that Social Media offers. As Christians we must be selective in what we look at. We are told that the eyes are the windows to our soul therefore we can be influenced by what we take time to watch. Proverbs 4: 23 says “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” As vessels that are ready to be filled with whatever we allow, we must guard out hearts so we can be a vessel of honor unto God. Our lives as Christians are like fountains whatever it contains that is what it will give out. James asked the question in James 3: 11 “Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? We know it is impossible for a fountain to do both at the same time. The Bible also encourages us in Philippians 4: 8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” Whatever becomes the norm in society can be an opportunity for enemy to use as a tool to increase deception, take away our quality time from family, church and the word of God. We have the power to control whatever comes our way, it is a matter of choice.

Social media can be a blessing as well as a distraction. The Bible tells us in Romans 6: 16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death or of obedience unto righteousness”. Let us use the benefits of Social Media to be a blessing and glorify God according to His will and not according to our own agenda. As Ecclesiastes 12: 13 tells us “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man” Let us all be influenced by the Holy Spirit.

  1. I can agree. Social Media can be a HUGE distraction. A few months ago, my husband and I both deleted our Facebook accounts. I started another one only for an online bible study that I was participating in. Now, that the bible study is over, I very rarely go on Facebook. I’ve all but abandoned my other 2 social media accounts as well. I find that I spend much more time listening for God’s voice and praying.

    • Very good Social Media once used to glorify God is good other from that the devil will be at play. As I am writing it came to my thought that Social Media is like music. Music can be used to glorify God is good but can be used to glorify the devil.
I hope you start another Bible study soon. It is best if we are occupied walking in the spirit and glorifying God.

  2. Maurice, I love how you dealt with this topic. The social media can definitely be a blessing or a curse. It is how we used. I pray that we will only use it for the glory of God. Have a great week in the Lord.

  3. Wonderfully explained! We all face a significant challenge, learning to be in the world of social media but not of the world: learning to let the Holy Spirit flow through us using this means to reach others for Him, and to “not be dominated by anything” as Paul said. Thank you for an insightful article ๐Ÿ™‚
