What is fear? Fear is an opposing factor to faith. Fear is a spirit directed by the devil to push us out of the course of victory. Fear exist when there is lack of perfect love. Perfect love expresses trust. The Bible says in 1 John 4: 18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love” When we experience Christ love we will become willing to draw closer to Him because there is no fear in His love”. He does not threaten us. He shows His love in forgiving us, He call us to a life of peace. He break the bondage in our lives that we struggle with. He elevate our lives and guide us in our purpose. This perfect love of Christ cast out the tormenting spirit of fear. As we grow in Christ and we begin to conquer fear, we are then made perfect in love
Fear is what the devil uses to oppress and suppress people. Sometimes fear comes through threats, horrible dreams and negative thoughts that is projected in our mind. We will then have to identify the root cause of the fear and reason why this spirit of fear is attacking us.
To overcome fear we must get into the word of God the Bible and see what God is saying about us. We must identify scriptures that will help us to overcome fear. We need to look at how God deal will people who become fearful. We must try also to associate ourselves with people who have overcome fear and learn their testimonies.
We have already identify that fear is an opposition to faith. Fear is something that exist and it is not given by God. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 1: 7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” God is all powerful and He said in Luke 10: 19 “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” Here God is showing us that fear is not from Him. God is love and He shares His love with us by giving His only begotten son Jesus Christ, to die so our sins can be pardoned. As we draw nearer to God he gives us knowledge, wisdom and understanding of His word and who He is and who we are in Him. This enables us to have a sound mind so won’t have to be fearful of the devil’s attacks.
When we become fearful in the presence of God there are two words we see used often in the scripture. They are ‘fear not’ and ‘peace be unto you’. God is telling us to trust him, rest in Him and have no fear, just apply faith and experience His greatness. He is also telling us to settle ourselves in Him because He is our safe-haven and we must dwell in His peace. When we are fearful we cannot have peace. To overcome fear we must seek peace as the Bible tells us in Psalm 34: 14 “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it”. Peace is so important to us that even when Christ was about to leave He told His disciples in John 14 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” The presence of the Lord is an environment of peace,. As we dwell in God’s presence and with understanding of who He is we live a life that overcome fear.
